Did you know that your income tax return goes through seven phases? Yes, and that is because to carry out this procedure, it is necessary to verify the tax information provided by taxpayers with their returns. In this post, we want to inform you about what each of the seven stages of the income tax return consists of and how important it is for you to know them for future reviews or claims.
As you know, the income tax return is filed annually to report on the income and tax obligations of taxpayers in the country. Below, we explain the key steps that taxpayers must follow when filing their income tax return in Spain.
In this phase, taxpayers gather all the relevant information about their income, deductions, and expenses that must be included in their income tax return.
Taxpayers can access the program or platform provided by the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda) to complete their income tax return. This can be done online or in person at Hacienda offices.
At this stage, all financial data is entered, and the tax debt or possible refund is calculated. Taxpayers must follow the indicated steps to complete their return correctly.
After reviewing and confirming that the return is accurate, taxpayers submit their return to Hacienda. They can choose to submit it online or in person at a Hacienda office.
Hacienda may carry out reviews and checks to verify the accuracy of the return and, if necessary, request additional documents or make adjustments.
Hacienda may carry out reviews and checks to verify the accuracy of the return and, if necessary, request additional documents or make adjustments. If the return results in a debt, the taxpayer must make the corresponding payment. If they are entitled to a refund, Hacienda will process the return.
Once the return has been processed, the income tax declaration process for the corresponding fiscal year is closed.
Although deadlines and procedures may change from year to year, generally, these are the steps you should follow if you want to track the status of your return:
Access the Tax Agency (AEAT) website: Access the website of the State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT) of Spain. You can do this from your favorite web browser.
Identification: You must log in to the portal with your credentials. To do this, you will need your NIF/NIE number and a password or digital certificate. If you do not have an account, you can register on the same portal.
Consultation of tax data: Once inside the portal, look for the "Tax data" or "Consult return" section and select the corresponding fiscal year.
Viewing the status: In this section, you will be able to see the status of your income tax return. If you have already filed the return, it will show whether it is "In process," "Checked," "Refunded," or another condition. You will also be able to see if there is any notification or request.
Document download: On this same platform, you can download the documents related to your return, such as the draft, the filed return, and the payment or refund documents.
Communications and notifications: In addition to checking the status, it is important to review any communication or notification that may be in your account, as Hacienda might request additional information or notify changes to your return.
