What is NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

In recent years, we have experienced growing interest in personal development and mental health — two closely related concepts — which, under the traditional social model we’ve built, have not been given enough value until now. This has generated various types of obstacles to people’s growth and even triggered mental disorders resulting from stress, lack of understanding, market demands, and other factors that make us forget about our life goals.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a discipline that, through communication, analyzes, understands, and changes people’s deeply rooted habits that prevent them from growing in the direction they truly desire. NLP focuses on how people process information, perceive the world, and communicate with themselves and others.

Do you know what perceptual filters are? Giving them a 360-degree turn is the key to the whole process

The overarching goal of NLP is to modify perceptual filters through which each individual filters and perceives reality. Perceptual filters are the set of cognitive and sensory processes we use to make sense of what we experience — such as past experiences, learning, beliefs, cultures, and prejudices — all of which distort reality as it is. NLP techniques readjust these perceptual filters so that we can understand life differently, allowing us to be happier.

What goals do NLP techniques pursue?

Now that you know what NLP focuses on, let’s look at the specific goals pursued by people who choose to begin this discipline to enrich their lives.

Start working on your personal development with these 10 NLP techniques

Below, we mention ten of the most commonly used NLP techniques in therapy. Many of them can be practiced independently. Are you ready to try?

  1. Anchoring: this technique involves associating a stimulus (such as a gesture, a word, or an image) with a specific emotional state. It is used to access and activate a desired emotional state at any time.
  2. Calibration: involves observing and recognizing a person’s nonverbal signals — such as facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language — to gain insight into their internal states and emotions.
  3. Reframing: a technique that consists of changing the interpretation or meaning of an experience, situation, or belief. The goal is to find a new perspective that generates more positive and constructive results.
  4. Milton Model: based on the hypnotic language patterns of therapist Milton Erickson. It involves using vague and ambiguous linguistic patterns to facilitate effective communication and stimulate the receiver’s imagination and creativity.
  5. Language Meta-Model: this technique uses specific questions designed to identify and challenge limiting assumptions and generalizations in a person’s language. It helps clarify and expand understanding of one’s experience and thinking.
  6. Creative visualization: used to create clear, vivid mental images of desired goals. It helps program the subconscious mind to achieve desired outcomes.
  7. Resource anchoring technique: involves associating a stimulus with a positive resource state, such as confidence or calm. It is later used to access that state when needed.
  8. Rapport: this technique establishes a harmonious and trusting connection with another person. It involves adapting language, tone of voice, posture, and breathing rhythm to create rapport and facilitate effective communication.
  9. Future pacing technique: used to visualize and plan future goals and objectives clearly and motivatingly. It helps establish a path toward achieving desired results.
  10. Temporal reframing technique: this technique changes the temporal perspective of an event or experience. It may involve revisiting a past experience from a present perspective or visualizing a successful future to generate motivation and overcome obstacles.

NLP is one of many disciplines focused on reorienting people so they can achieve their goals, mental peace, and overall well-being. If you also find this field of study interesting, don’t forget to subscribe to Educa.Pro to stay informed about all the latest updates.
