The reasons? Digital transformation, the rise of competition across all sectors, the new CSR values demanded by society, and globalisation – all of this raises the bar and means that, to remain competitive, a high level of organisation and specialisation within work teams is required.

In this post, we’d like to tell you about the four of the most innovative project management methodologies which can significantly improve the efficiency of any department. Discover them with us!

Project manager: the new role that streamlines the workflow and ensures the project is successfully completed

Before we look in more detail at the different types of project management methodologies, we need to know who the Project manager, because they are the person who will choose the most suitable candidate for each job and on whom it will depend whether the workflow runs as expected.

The role of the project manager is crucial to the successful management of projects. This professional must possess a wide range of skills, including the ability to leadership, the effective communication, the decision-making, the time management and the conflict resolution. Furthermore, they must be organised, pay attention to detail and be able to plan and coordinate the team’s tasks efficiently.

Furthermore, the project manager’s main responsibilities include: the setting objectives, the drawing up a project plan, the allocation of resources, the monitoring progress, the risk identification and mitigation, and the ongoing communication with stakeholders to ensure that the project progresses as planned.

How do you choose the most suitable methodology for each project?

In order for the project manager to carry out their role effectively and ensure high-quality results are delivered on time and to the required standard, they must be familiar with various project management methodologies and know which one is best suited to each project based on its specific characteristics: the number of staff involved, the scale of the project, the desired scope, the necessary resources, the specific needs of the workforce, whether external services or professionals are required, the estimated time it will take to complete each task, etc.

Furthermore, it is important that the person in charge of leading the project has the basic digital skills to maintain smooth communication with everyone involved, particularly when there are people working remotely, as they will need to keep the group united and well informed of all progress. Likewise, they should be proficient in a project management tool such as Trello, Asana, Teams, etc., will be essential for organising and distributing the workload.

Taking all these details into account is vital for applying the correct methodology.

Let’s take a look at the four most efficient project management methodologies

There are many methodologies for work management, but as technology advances, companies evolve and innovations are introduced in human resources, these processes also change to adapt. Let’s take a look at the most commonly used ones today.

Waterfall methodology

It adopts a project management approach characterised by being linear and sequential. In this methodology, the development process is divided into clearly defined stages and each stage must be completed before moving on to the next, because once a stage is complete, there is no going back. These stages are usually: requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance.

In the waterfall methodology, once a stage has begun, it is not possible to return to previous stages, which means that significant changes to the requirements or design may result in delays or additional costs. This approach is particularly suitable for projects where the requirements are stable and well understood from the outset.

Critical chain methodology

The weather takes centre stage In this methodology, the focus is on managing the project and the resources required to ensure its successful completion. It differs from other methods in that it identifies the «critical paths» within a project, which are the sequences of tasks that, if delayed, would affect the completion date of the project as a whole. The methodology prioritises these critical paths and allocates resources effectively to safeguard them, avoiding wasting time on non-critical tasks. In addition, «buffers» are built into the schedule to cope with variability and risks, which helps to increase the likelihood that the project will be completed on time.

Agile methodology

This is perhaps the most famous one, and you’ve no doubt heard of it, even if you’re not a project manager. It originated in the field of software development, but has now spread beyond the world of technology. It is characterised by its flexibility and a collaborative approach Whereas, unlike traditional methods – such as the waterfall methodology – which are linear and sequential, in the agile methodology, tasks are delivered progressively. This allows for the results to be corrected and refined.

With the agile methodology, rather than planning the entire project in advance, it is divided into shorter iterations known as «sprints», and during each sprint, the team works on a set of tasks that have been previously prioritised. At the end of the sprint, a functional increment of the product is delivered.

Agile principles encourage constant communication between the team and stakeholders, collaboration, rapid response to changes in requirements, and the continuous delivery of value to the customer. Examples of agile methodologies include Scrum, Kanban and Extreme Programming (XP).

Hybrid methodology

The hybrid approach has become increasingly popular, as enables organisations to adapt to the changing dynamics of projects, whilst providing structure and control where necessary. It combines elements of traditional methodologies, such as the waterfall methodology, with agile approaches. The original idea behind a hybrid methodology is to adapt to the specific needs of each project, allowing for greater flexibility without sacrificing structure and planning. In this way, it draws on the advantages of each methodology, providing even greater flexibility and room for manoeuvre.

Would you like to find out more about project management, the latest developments and the most disruptive changes?
