To achieve a business objective, it is important that all teams, within their respective areas of responsibility, pull in the same direction; there are nine roles within the team that are crucial to making this possible. Would you like to know what they are? We invite you to find out in this post!

What are roles within work teams?

The roles within work teams are the specific roles that members play in helping to achieve of the team’s objectives. Each role has defined responsibilities and may vary depending on the individual skills, knowledge and experience of each team member.

It is therefore essential that each group is properly integrated into the organisational structure so that their work is reflected in the organisation’s objectives; to this end, there are various models that analyse and define how each team operates, thereby setting out the nine roles within work teams.

The Belbin Model and its nine team roles

The nine roles within a work team that we want to discuss in this post are based on the Belbin Model, which involves identifying nine behavioural styles that people tend to display within a team. These roles, proposed by Meredith Belbin, describe individual strengths and how each person can contribute effectively to teamwork.

Action roles

Roles within a team focus on carrying out the tasks and achieve tangible results. These roles focus on carrying out specific actions to achieve the team’s objectives and are further subdivided into three additional profiles:

Implementer: The role of the implementer involves turning ideas into concrete actions, organising them efficiently for implementation. In addition, they plan the resources required for these actions and monitor the process.

Impeller: They are the ones who motivate the team and take on the challenge of keeping it united and inspired to achieve new goals. They tend to be proactive, quick to make decisions and creative in coming up with new ideas.

Finisher: He pays close attention to detail and the quality of the results. He ensures that deadlines are met and spots potential errors; his key characteristics include perfectionism and rigour.

Mental roles

The mental roles within the group focus on analysis and the generation of ideasand the contribution of specialist knowledge. Their main tasks are to engage in critical reflection, to develop creative ideas and to bring specialist expertise to the work. Furthermore, within this division, three distinct roles can be identified.

Assessment supervisor: Their role is to analyse the options objectively in order to make informed decisions. They assess each situation critically, identify potential risks and seek preventative solutions.

Brain: possesses technical knowledge and specific skills to provide project-specific solutions. Their role also involves offering advice, as their expertise is essential to the successful completion of tasks and the achievement of objectives.

Specialist: He possesses both technical expertise and extensive experience in his field. His role is to guide the team towards success in the most efficient way possible.

Social roles

Social roles within a team focus on interaction, collaboration and maintaining effective relationships among members. These roles focus on promoting harmony and facilitating the communication and resolve conflicts within the group to foster a collaborative environment. Furthermore, we can identify three distinct profiles within social roles.

Resource researcher: acts as an external liaison, seeking out and utilising external resources for the benefit of the team and establishing links between individuals or service providers. Furthermore, they facilitate access to contact details and manage the distribution of these resources amongst the team.

Binder: works to create and maintain a harmonious atmosphere, is concerned with the quality of interpersonal relationships and fosters a sense of camaraderie. One of their main roles is to mediate in the event of workplace disputes and to offer emotional support in stressful situations.

Coordinator: is responsible for leading and organising the team’s activities. They must also assign tasks to each member and always strive to ensure consistency in the team’s collective work.

Benefits of building a balanced team

As you can see, all these roles bring great value to work teams, as they promote efficiency, quality and organisation in every project. It is essential for a group to have a balanced mix of profiles, as approaching tasks from different perspectives will ensure a successful and competitive outcome.

Do you find this area of business management interesting?
