Our ambition to grow, evolve and improve has almost got out of hand, and now we feel that the pace is too fast and that perhaps we should stop to catch our breath or rethink the direction of our lives. For all of you who find yourselves at this point, we’ve written this post, in which we want to take a few minutes to talk about life coaching and, whilst we’re at it, take a breather from the daily grind.

What does life coaching involve?

We usually like to start our posts by setting the scene and defining the term we want to explore in more detail, because there are so many new areas emerging in the field of professional development and personal – it’s important to know what we’re talking about. However, I’m sure you’re already familiar with the term ‘coaching’, which, in short, consists of to guide, encourage and motivate a person to achieve their goals in some area of their life.

Specifically, the Life coaching focuses on guiding to help individuals achieve specific personal and professional goals, using techniques and tools to develop skills, identify objectives, overcome obstacles and improve their quality of life.

5 things a life coach does

An expert life coach knows how to identify where their client is on the journey towards their goals and, above all, is able to determine which methods and tools will be most effective for them, taking into account their individual characteristics and personal circumstances. Let’s look at some of them.

Set clear goals: uses the SMART goal-setting technique (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) to help the individual set concrete and achievable goals.

To provide support: uses active listening and empathy to understand the individual’s concerns and challenges, providing a safe space for reflection.

Promoting responsibility: use the ‘wheel of life’ technique or self-assessment questionnaires to help the person identify areas for improvement and take responsibility for their own progress.

Developing skills: learn about visualisation techniques, role-play and personal development exercises to enhance your skills and overcome obstacles.

Giving constructive feedback: applies the model of non-violent communication and positive feedback techniques to provide constructive feedback that motivates and fosters personal growth.

What are the differences between life coaching and psychological therapy?

The main difference between psychological therapy and life coaching lies in their approaches and objectives. Attending coaching sessions can be a good option if what you’re looking for is that a bit of extra motivation and organisation that drive you towards achieving a specific goal. However, if what you need is to deal with emotional or mental problems or changing behavioural patterns, by addressing psychological disorders and healing processes, you’ll need to take a more in-depth approach and scientific, with a focus on diagnosis and treatment.

Another key difference between life coaching and psychological therapy is that the former focuses on the person’s present and future, whilst the latter explores the patient’s past in order to come to terms with the most traumatic experiences.

What benefits can life coaching offer you?

Anyone who’s never felt stuck, raise your hand – and let’s be clear, there’s nothing wrong with that.
