Do you feel anxious or bored if you don’t check your mobile every so often? Do you feel that when you log off social media, you’re missing out on something important? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, perhaps you should consider taking a digital detox.

Definition of a digital detox

The digital detox A digital detox involves reducing or eliminating the use of electronic devices for a set period of time. Ultimately, the aim is to free oneself from technological dependence and reconnect with reality, with oneself and with others. At this point, we would like to emphasise something important: a digital detox does not mean giving up technology entirely, but rather using it in a mindful, responsible and productive way.

Possible consequences of excessive use of technology

Compulsive use of technology can lead to psychological consequences such as stress, anxiety, isolation or a lack of concentration. Below, we summarise the potential negative consequences of excessive use of technology:

Being constantly connected can create a sense of pressure, of fear of missing out, replying to every message, comparing yourself to others. Did you know that this situation can lead to an increase in the level of cortisol? This is the stress hormone, which affects the nervous system, the immune system and mood.

Using screens before bed can disrupt the circadian rhythm, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle. The consequences are evident in symptoms such as insomnia, daytime drowsiness, lack of energy, and problems with memory and concentration.

Prolonged exposure to screens can cause dry eyes, irritation, headaches, blurred vision or short-sightedness.

It can lead to poor posture and result in pain in the back, neck, shoulders, arms or hands.

Excessive use of technology can reduce genuine contact with other people. Furthermore, it affects the development of social skills such as communication, empathy and conflict resolution.

6 tips for putting a digital detox into practice

To give a digital detox a go, you can follow these tips:

Turn off push notifications: You probably receive notifications quite often that make you look at your mobile phone and take your mind off whatever you were doing. Avoid letting constant messages or alerts interrupt your concentration or your free time.

Limit access to social media: Consider setting time limits for social media use. You can use apps or built-in features on your devices to help you monitor and manage the time you spend on these platforms. This will help you reduce constant screen time and encourage a digital break.

Keep only the essential apps: Delete or uninstall any apps you don’t need or that cause you distraction or anxiety. Apps such as countdown timers or those that constantly send you notifications can be a major distraction.

Create technology-free spaces: Set aside areas in your home where the use of electronic devices is prohibited at certain times of the day, such as during meals or before bedtime. This will encourage more mindful time spent together and help you switch off.

Take part in outdoor activities: Go for a walk, do some yoga, try mindfulness techniques or read a book in a park, or simply enjoy the outdoors. These activities will help you take your mind off things and reduce your reliance on digital devices.

Prioritise human contact: Make time to spend face-to-face with family and friends, rather than communicating solely via electronic devices. Organise social activities to strengthen bonds and foster interpersonal communication.

Benefits of practising a digital detox

So, if you’re feeling anxious or stressed because of excessive use of technology, you need a break.
