Above all, in the wake of the pandemic, there has been a exponential growth of online platforms which have made education more accessible and equitable, and this has been a major milestone in terms of social progress.

Thanks to innovative digital resources and collaborative tools, training opportunities have been expanded, and teachers clearly play a key role in this process.

A teacher who is motivated to nurture pupils’ talent and curiosity, and who is interested in new technologies and their own professional development, is the kind of teacher most needed in today’s education system.

7 Digital skills for teachers that are essential for day-to-day work

Teaching is a profession closely linked to vocation and to the evolution of society – a field that is constantly changing and highly influential. Talking about technology is like talking about a parallel universe to which we must adapt quickly so as not to fall into the black hole of obsolescence. To situate ourselves within this new paradigm, we divide the digital skills in the following five areas: information, communication, security and technical problem-solving.

But let’s take it a step further: what digital skills are expected of teachers today?

Use of office software: Teachers must be able to use tools such as online learning platforms, productivity software (e.g. Microsoft Office or Google Workspace) and content management systems effectively.

Proficiency in web browsing: Teachers must be able to search for reliable information online and assess the quality and relevance of the resources they find.

Digital communication: It is essential that teachers know how to communicate effectively via digital media, including email, instant messaging and video conferencing.

Digital content creation: the ability to create teaching materials in digital format, such as multimedia presentations, videos and interactive documents, is essential.

Media literacy and information: Teachers should help pupils develop the critical skills needed to analyse and understand the media and online information.

Cybersecurity: When it comes to creating, accessing and sharing information, it is important to be aware of best practices in online security and to be able to identify preventative measures. Furthermore, it is essential that teachers teach pupils how to protect their identity and personal data online and, in particular, on social media.

Online assessment: Teaching staff must be familiar with online assessment tools and know how to design tests and exams that can be taken remotely.

Online collaborative learning: Digital environments encourage teamwork and collaboration amongst students through online tools and spaces where everyone can participate at the same time and see each other’s work. This is incredibly enriching and dispels the notion that online education isolates us.

Adapting to change: Educational technology is constantly evolving, so teachers must be willing to learn new tools and methodologies as they emerge. For example, tools such as Moodle are very common.

Copyright awareness: although you have access to all kinds of content on the internet, it is important to understand the legal aspects relating to the use of such content contents and teach students about its use and the different types of copyright so that they do not inadvertently breach any rules.

Challenges posed by digital transformation to the education sector

The shift to digital promises a bright future for education, but it also presents challenges in terms of equitable access, cyber security and adaptation by all those involved.

Let’s look at some of the key aspects to consider to ensure that the digitalisation of education represents a step forward rather than an obstacle:

Digital divide: a lack of access to devices and an internet connection can put certain pupils at a disadvantage, creating a digital divide between those who can benefit from online education and those who cannot.

Inequality in access: Ensuring that all students, regardless of their location or socio-economic background, have access to digital education is a major challenge.

Quality of content: The proliferation of online content does not always guarantee its quality, which means that educators must be able to identify reliable and effective educational resources.

Social disengagement: Online learning can lead to a loss of social interaction between students and teachers, which is essential for learning and social development.

Online safety: Cybersecurity is a critical issue in digital education, as students’ and teachers’ data must be protected against cyber threats.

Teacher training: Educators need to develop digital skills in order to teach online effectively.

Student motivation and commitment: Online learning may require greater self-discipline on the part of students, which can sometimes affect their motivation and commitment.

Quality assessment and control: Designing effective assessments and ensuring academic integrity in a digital environment presents additional challenges.

Ongoing technological development: Educational technology is advancing rapidly, which means that educational institutions must keep up with the latest innovations.

Data privacy: The collection and management of student data must comply with privacy and data protection regulations.

Don’t get left behind – join the digital revolution with Educa.Pro!

The education system is changing, and with it, the way we learn.
