It is important to highlight a particularly significant stage in children’s development, which will have a direct influence on the sort of people they will become in the future: arrival at school, as that is when they begin to to receive new input and information different from that at home. It is as if their cognitive system opens up to the world to integrate more complex concepts, values and behaviours which, through repetition, they eventually internalise and replicate. For this reason, and in order to build a more equal world, it is so important to address gender equality in education.

In this post, we’ll be discussing how values of equality can be promoted from an early age and carried through into the workplace of the future. Don’t miss this post!

The role of the teacher: key to instilling the values of equality from an early age

The teacher will be the the most important socialising agent For children, teachers come after their parents, and, as authority figures, their teachings will carry great weight in the early years of a child’s life. Thus, the role of the teacher can be crucial in ensuring that future adults promote equality in their communities.

How can we prevent gender discrimination at school?

Stereotypes of genre still persist in all areas of society. According to reports from UNESCO, Around half of men believe they would make better political leaders, and the ‘best’ thing is that these beliefs have been ingrained in them since childhood.

To prevent these, it is essential to foster an inclusive and respectful environment, in which the following is encouraged: equal opportunities, a non-sexist language and teaching materials and to encourage the equal participation of all pupils. The best way to avoid the inequality It is by challenging gender stereotypes and promoting empathy and mutual respect.

How can we promote gender equality at school?

In the 21st century, with access to education guaranteed for all children and young people, a survey carried out in 2022 by the Youth Barometer, confirms that between 20% and 30% of students believe that careers related to education or care are more suitable for women, whilst those focused on science and technology are better suited to men. This widespread belief is a clear example of how much work still needs to be done in terms of gender equality in education.

Various initiatives can be carried out to promote equality from the earliest stages of education.

Promoting inclusive education

It is essential to commit to the inclusion of students with diverse backgrounds. This involves adapting the educational environment so that all students, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have access to a quality education.

Helping to create a diverse curriculum

The school curriculum should reflect the diversity of society, including gender, ethnic, cultural and social perspectives. It should include texts and materials that represent a wide range of identities and experiences.

Develop awareness-raising and training programmes

Educators must receive training on equality and diversity so that they can address these issues effectively in the classroom. This includes fostering empathy and respect for differences.

Using inclusive language

To promote the use of inclusive language that does not reinforce gender stereotypes or discrimination. This involves using gender-neutral language and being mindful of the words and phrases used.

Inclusive extracurricular activities

Organise extracurricular activities that encourage all students to take part, regardless of their abilities or interests. These may include sports, art, music and diversity clubs.

To provide mentoring and support

Establish mentoring schemes between students of different ages to encourage mutual support and the development of social skills. Additional resources can also be provided for those who need extra support.

Promoting non-traditional gender roles

Encourage the exploration of non-traditional interests and gender roles. This may include showcasing role models who challenge gender stereotypes in professions and activities.

Parental involvement

To involve parents in their children’s education and to encourage open communication between school and home. Parents can play an important role in promoting values of equality.

Evaluation and monitoring of the actions carried out

To monitor progress in promoting equality in education on an ongoing basis. This involves collecting data on pupil performance and the school environment, and using this data to make informed decisions.

Celebrating diversity

Organise events and activities that celebrate cultural, ethnic and gender diversity. This helps to create an inclusive and positive school environment.

If you’d like to find out more about how to promote equality or how to to implement equality plans within the company, we recommend you carry on reading the Educa.Pro blog, where we discuss all sorts of topics that concern us as individuals and as workers.

Take note of these strategies for equality in the classroom, and let’s all work together – as education professionals – to build a fairer society.

[1

post-4001","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
