If you think about it, anything worthwhile takes time, which is why, in this post, we want to talk to you about time-wasters and how to get rid of them.

Learn to spot time-wasters before it’s too late

Time-wasters are those situations or behaviours that we allow to take up our time and cause us to stray from our goals, being procrastination and perfectionism their main allies. Whenever we interrupt our work because we’ve lost focus, put something off until later, or let problems take over our minds completely, we’re allowing our time to be stolen from us.

The most important thing is that you learn to overcome these kinds of obstacles by recognising them in good time; here’s what they are:

Procrastination: putting off important tasks or carrying out lower-priority activities instead of urgent ones.

Excess of meetings: taking part in long or unnecessary meetings that take up time without adding any value.

Excessive multitasking: trying to do several things at once, which can reduce efficiency and the quality of the work.

Constant interruptions: being distracted by notifications, phone calls or frequent interruptions that break your concentration.

Lack of planning: not having a clear or well-defined plan for the tasks to be carried out, which leads to time being wasted on last-minute decisions.

Excessive perfectionism: spending too much time perfecting irrelevant details rather than completing tasks efficiently.

Excessive use of social media or electronic devices: Spending too much time on social media or using electronic devices can be a major time-waster.

Bad habits: Living a life without even a modicum of routine does not help with organisation, which is so essential when we have to juggle several tasks a day. Staying up late, eating poorly, not doing any exercise at all, or overindulging in certain substances that are best avoided – that’s all it takes to waste your precious time.

How to avoid wasting time completely

Fortunately, there are ways to combat these time-wasters; we’ll explain how below:

Carlson’s Law

Carlson’s Law is a principle of computer programming which states that «if a programme works well, when it is modified, the parts not related to the change should not be affected». This emphasises modularity and minimises side effects when making changes to the code.

Fraisse’s Law

Fraisse’s Law in auditory psychology states that the perception of the duration of an event depends on the amount of information present during that period, with the relevance and complexity of the information influencing an individual’s perception of time.

Illich’s Law

Illich’s Law, proposed by the sociologist Ivan Illich, criticises the concept of the «productivity paradox», arguing that efficiency in production and services can lead to counterproductive effects, creating additional problems such as over-reliance on institutions and a decline in individual autonomy. This law challenges the idea that more services or production always lead to a better quality of life.

Pareto’s Law

Pareto’s Law, also known as the 80/20 principle, posits that approximately 80% of the results stem from 20% of the causes. It applies in various fields, indicating that a minority of factors is usually responsible for the majority of the observed effects.

What about you?
