Speaking of digital transformation... the business sector is not the only one that has evolved and embraced new technologies to streamline and improve efficiency; the education system is also benefiting from this revolution, which makes perfect sense since today’s students will be tomorrow’s professionals.

The way educational content is generated, accessed, and consumed is very different from a few years ago, and indeed, now we want more interactivity, more practicality, flexibility, dynamism and, why not say it, speed.

In this post, we want to address the topic of digital transformation in education from the teachers’ perspective — a key element in the transmission of knowledge.

Stay with us and discover the most important digital competencies for teachers!

Why is it so important for today’s teachers to acquire digital skills?

The incorporation of technology into classrooms has enabled greater interaction, personalization, and flexibility in the learning process. Especially after the pandemic, there has been an exponential rise in online platforms that have made education more accessible and equal — a true milestone in social evolution.

Thanks to innovative digital resources and collaborative tools, training opportunities have expanded, for which teachers clearly represent a key part of the mechanism.

A teacher motivated to foster students’ talent and curiosity, interested in new technologies and their own professional growth, is the profile most needed in today’s education system.

7 Essential Digital Competencies for Teachers in Daily Practice

Teaching is a profession strongly linked to vocation and the evolution of society — ever-changing and influential. Talking about technology is like talking about a parallel universe to which we must quickly adapt in order not to fall into the black hole of obsolescence. To locate ourselves in this new paradigm, we divide digital competencies into the following five areas: informational area, communication area, safety area, and the area for solving technical problems.

But let’s go further — what digital skills are required of today’s teachers?

Office tools management: teachers must be able to effectively use tools such as online learning platforms, productivity software (for example, Microsoft Office or Google Workspace), and content management systems.

Web browsing proficiency: teachers should be competent in searching for reliable online information and in evaluating the quality and relevance of the resources found.

Digital communication: it is essential that teachers know how to communicate effectively through digital means, including email, instant messaging, and video conferencing.

Digital content creation: the ability to create teaching materials in digital format, such as multimedia presentations, videos, and interactive documents, is essential.

Media and information literacy: teachers must help students develop critical skills to analyze and understand media and online information.

Cybersecurity: when generating, accessing, and sharing information, it is important to know best online security practices and be able to detect preventive needs. Furthermore, it is essential that teachers teach students how to protect their identity and personal data on the internet and, specifically, on social networks.

Online assessment: the teaching staff must be familiar with online evaluation tools and know how to design tests and exams that can be conducted remotely.

Collaborative online learning: digital environments encourage teamwork and collaboration among students through online tools and spaces where everyone can participate simultaneously and view each other’s work. This is highly enriching and breaks the belief that online education isolates us.

Adaptation to change: educational technology is constantly evolving, so teachers must be willing to learn new tools and methodologies as they emerge. For example, tools such as Moodle are very common.

Copyright awareness: although one has access to all kinds of content on the internet, it is important to understand the legal aspects related to the use of such content and to teach students about its use and the different types of copyright to prevent unintentional infringement.

The shift toward digital education promises a bright future but also presents challenges in terms of equitable access, cybersecurity, and adaptation by all stakeholders.

Let’s look at some key aspects to consider so that the digitalization of education represents progress rather than an obstacle:
