As you know, tax returns are filed annually to report on taxpayers’ income and tax liabilities in the country. Below, we explain the key steps taxpayers must follow when filing their tax returns in Spain.
Pending
At this stage, taxpayers gather all the relevant information about their revenue, deductions and expenses that they must include in their tax return.
Checking the draft
Taxpayers can access the programme or platform provided by the Spanish Tax Agency (Hacienda) to complete their tax return. This can be done online or in person at Hacienda offices.
Please check the amount
At this stage, all the financial details are entered and the tax liability or potential refund is calculated. Taxpayers must follow the steps set out to complete their tax return correctly.
Your declaration has been processed
After checking and confirming that the tax return is accurate, taxpayers submit it to the tax authorities. They can choose to submit it online or in person at a tax office.
Your return is currently being processed
The tax authorities may carry out reviews and checks to verify the accuracy of the tax return and, if necessary, request additional documents or make adjustments.
Not satisfied

If the tax return results in a tax liability, the taxpayer must make the corresponding payment. If the taxpayer is entitled to a refund, the tax authorities will process the refund.
Refund issued
Once the tax return has been processed, the tax return process for the relevant tax year is completed.
How do I check the status of my tax return?
Although deadlines and procedures may vary from year to year, these are generally the steps you should follow if you wish to check the status of your tax return:
Access to the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) website: Visit the website of Spain’s State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT). You can do this using your favourite web browser.
Identification: you must Log in to the portal using your login details. To do this, you will need your NIF/NIE number and a password or digital certificate. If you do not have an account, you can register on the portal itself.
Viewing tax details: Once you are logged in to the portal, look for the «Tax details» or «View tax return» section and select the relevant tax year.
Status display: In this section, you can view the status of your tax return income. If you have already submitted your tax return, it will show whether it is «Being processed», «Verified», «Rejected» or in another status. You will also be able to see if there are any notifications or requests.
Document downloads: On this platform, you can download documents relating to your tax return, such as the draft, the submitted return and any payment or refund documents.
Communications and notifications: As well as checking the status, it is important to review any messages or notifications you may have in your account, as the tax authorities may request further information or notify you of changes to your tax return.
