3 leadership strategies for more effective teams today

In these times of constant evolution and change in the world of work, it is common to hear people talking about leadership and what it means, what makes an effective leader, and the differences between leadership and simply being a boss. All of this highlights the importance of having someone to lead a project, without this restricting the freedom and initiative of the rest of the group. To understand the leader’s new role, in this post we will examine the three leadership dynamics that are crucial for effective performance, along with their methodologies and objectives.

If your aim is to become a good leader and you’re hoping to secure a position of responsibility within your organisation, read this post and decide what sort of leader you want to be.

What do we mean by ‘leadership dynamics’?

The leadership dynamics refer to the approaches, behaviours, strategies and practices that a leader employs to to lead, motivate, influence and guide to guide their team towards achieving objectives and results. These dynamics encompass interactions, communication skills, decision-making, conflict management and the ability to inspire and develop team members. They represent the actions and methods a leader uses to exercise their leadership effectively.

Discover the 3 most innovative leadership approaches

The most innovative and effective leadership approaches focus on objectives such as improving team performance and boosting motivation and commitment, whilst fostering adaptability They help teams adapt to different situations, strengthen collaboration and group cohesion, and foster the individual and collective development of team members. Ultimately, the aim is to promote a balance between corporate objectives and those of each individual professional, so that motivation becomes the driving force behind business growth.

Below, we set out three examples of leadership approaches that will mark the start of a new era in your company:

Counting in the dark

In this activity, teams are formed and given a set of objects or items which they must count or sort without being able to see them. One member is blindfolded or has their eyes closed, and the others guide them verbally to complete the task. The aim is to improve communication, trust and teamwork skills.

Paper Aeroplanes

Participants must design and build paper aeroplanes, but with limited instructions or no specific details. A competition is then held to see which aeroplane flies the furthest or has the best design. This activity encourages creativity, decision-making under pressure and collaboration.

Positive and negative energy

In this exercise, we explore emotions and how they affect the environment. Participants are asked to share situations that evoke positive and negative emotions in them, identifying how these influence the workplace. The aim is to raise awareness of the emotional impact and to foster a more positive and collaborative atmosphere.

Although there are many other exercises designed to develop positive leadership, these can be regarded as some of the most enjoyable and as best representing modern leadership, in which one person leads and the others actively collaborate in achieving the common goal.

Before applying a leadership approach, bear these tips in mind

As not all teams are the same, nor do they have the same needs or the same resources, before carrying out a leadership exercise, it is important to consider the following questions:

Assess the team’s needs: Carry out a detailed analysis of the team members’ characteristics, skills and needs. Consider their level of experience, motivation, working style and the project’s objectives to determine which methodology would best suit their dynamics.

Understand the nature of the project: examine the specific characteristics of the project or task being carried out. Determine whether it is a short-term or long-term project, highly creative, based on repetitive processes, or one that requires adaptability and flexibility.

Take into account the context and organisational culture: Bear in mind the organisation’s culture, values and policies. Some leadership approaches may be more in line with the company’s culture than others, which will make them easier to implement and more readily accepted by the team.

Consult and liaise with the team: Involve team members in the decision-making process. Conduct surveys, interviews or meetings to gather their views, preferences and suggestions on which leadership approach they consider most suitable for the project.

Flexibility and adaptability: Don’t stick rigidly to a single methodology. Be flexible and open to adapting or combining different leadership approaches in line with the changing needs of the project and the team. The ability to adapt to circumstances can be crucial to successful leadership within the team.
