Workplace motivation: how to inspire and retain teams

Work motivation is a a crucial element in the workplace, which has a direct impact on employees’ performance and productivity.

In this article, we’ll look at what the motivation work-related, and how it affects work performance.

What is motivation at work?

Work motivation is the set of drives, desires, needs and expectations that prompt a worker to carry out certain activities or achieve certain objectives within their working environment.

This motivation may be intrinsic, that is to say, stemming from within the individual (such as the desire for self-improvement or the satisfaction of a job well done), or extrinsic, stem from external incentives (such as a pay rise or public recognition).

As you can see, employee motivation is key to understanding and optimising work performance, as the right motivational factors can boost satisfaction, commitment and effectiveness in the workplace.

Theories of work motivation

One of the most influential theories in the field of workplace motivation is that of Frederick Herzberg, who proposed the two-factor theory. According to Herzberg, there are factors that can lead to job satisfaction and others that can cause dissatisfaction.

The Two-Factor Theory

  • Factors Contributing to Satisfaction: Satisfaction factors, also known as motivational factors, are those that generate a sense of fulfilment and personal growth at work. Recognition, the development opportunities Professionalism and autonomy in decision-making are examples of these factors.
  • Factors contributing to dissatisfaction:On the other hand, there are the factors leading to dissatisfaction, or hygiene factors, which are those that, if absent, can cause employees to feel unhappy. These include aspects such as working conditions, pay and company policies.

In addition to Herzberg’s theory, there are other important theories that help us to understand motivation at work. These include the expectancy theory of Vroom, the equity theory of Adams and the theory of self-determination of Deci and Ryan.

Expectation theory

Vroom’s expectancy theory suggests that employees are motivated by the belief that their efforts will lead to good performance, which in turn will lead to desired rewards. This theory emphasises the importance of setting challenging targets and offering meaningful rewards.

Equity theory

According to Adams’ equity theory, employees seek to maintain a balance between the effort they put into their work and the rewards they receive in return. When they perceive a lack of fairness in comparison with their colleagues, this is when they may experience dissatisfaction and a decline in motivation.

Self-determination theory

And finally, self-determination theory, which posits that individuals are intrinsically motivated when they feel they have autonomy, competence and a sense of connection with their work objectives. Providing opportunities for self-direction and personal development can boost this intrinsic motivation amongst employees.

The importance of measuring motivation at work

That said, you should be aware that measuring motivation at work is essential for companies for a number of reasons:

Firstly, it provides valuable information on the emotional and psychological state among staff, which enables us to identify potential issues relating to a lack of motivation or commitment.

Furthermore, understanding the levels of motivation within the organisation helps toto devise effective strategies to improve the working environment, increase staff satisfaction and boost the company’s overall performance.

And, finally, it facilitates the impact assessment which has had the implementation of human resources policies and practices in staff commitment and satisfaction.

Factors influencing motivation at work

Now that we know all of the above, we must bear in mind that there are various factors that can influence motivation at work of employees. Some of the main ones include:

Recognition and rewards

People tend to be more motivated when they are recognised and rewarded for good work and performance. These rewards can range from public recognition to financial bonuses or career promotions.

Working environment

It is well known that a positive working environment, which fosters collaboration, respect and open communication, can significantly boost staff motivation.

Career development opportunities

People tend to be more motivated when they have the opportunity to develop professionally. These opportunities can arise, on the one hand, through training, and mentoring programmes or the opportunity to take on new challenges and responsibilities.

Work-life balance

Companies that promote a healthy work-life balance amongst their staff tend to see higher levels of motivation and job satisfaction.

Effective leadership

Leaders who inspire, empower and support their teams tend to create a more motivating and productive working environment. This leads to a significant increase in colleagues’ motivation at work.

By taking all these factors into account, we will be able to implement effective workplace strategies to create a motivating and fulfilling working environment.

How does motivation at work affect performance?

Motivation at work has a significant impact on staff performance and, consequently, on the company’s overall success. When workers are motivated, tend to be more committed to their work, demonstrate a higher level of creativity and proactivity, and are more willing to take on additional responsibilities.

Similarly, people who are motivated at work tend to have a more positive attitude towards challenges and obstacles, which helps them to overcome them more effectively.

On the other hand, when people aren’t motivated enough, they are likely to experience low levels of energy and enthusiasm at work, which may have a negative impact on their performance and productivity.

A lack of motivation can also lead to higher staff turnover, absenteeism and interpersonal conflicts in the workplace.
